Finland loves its heavy metal music. And we know you feel the same.
Finland is the heavy metal country, with more than 50 metal bands for every 100,000 inhabitants. That’s more than anywhere else in the known universe.
But which Finnish city has the most metal bands per capita? Which city is the Capital of Metal?
The Capital of Metal website aims to put all the metal bands in Finland – and their hometowns – on the map.
It’s a chance for metal bands to tell the world about themselves in their own words, and to show some hometown love.
And it’s an opportunity to demonstrate to the international audience how respected and loved metal music and its creators are in Finland.
Bands have been able to tag themselves to their home city at the Capital of Metal site until June 20th. The winning city, the Capital of Metal, will be revealed on June 21st.
The Capital of Metal wins not only bragging rights, but also a presence at Helsinki’s Tuska Festival for a chance to reveal its metal core to the festival audience and the world.
But it’s all about the community, and what would the metal community be without the fans.
Fans who visited the site and hit the like button in support of their favourite bands before the end of May had a chance to win a trip for two to Tuska Festival, including travel, accommodation and VIP tickets. Everyone liking the bands has also been be entered in a draw to win gift certificates to Record Shop X for some more of that Finnish metal music.
The Capital of Metal is a product of cooperation between Tuska Festival, Sony Music Finland, The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, thisisFINLAND, Record Shop X, Musamaailma, Radio Rock, Inferno and most importantly the metal cities of Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Kemi, Kuopio, Lahti, Lappeenranta, Oulu, Tampere and Vaasa.
